Description

An oval wall mirror in a heavy iron frame, 85cm tall and 52cm wide. The frame is worked in steps: a rounded outer moulding, then a flat band, then a fine row of beading running the whole way round the inner edge against the glass. The finish is dark and has been rubbed back over the raised work, so the metal reads warm brown where the beading and the outer edge catch the light and near black in the hollows.

It hangs portrait, from a flat iron bar riveted across the back, and the glass and the backing are held into the frame by six riveted clips. At 9kg the fixing it hangs on has to take the weight. An oval at 85 by 52cm reads taller than it is wide, which suits a hallway, the wall above a chest of drawers, or a bedroom where a rectangle would sit heavier.

The frame is iron and the glass is mirror. The beading around the inner edge is worked by hand, so the spacing shifts a little as it goes round and no two frames come out the same. The frame is 3cm deep and the mirror weighs 9kg.
