Description

The Downing Street is a 600mm outdoor wall light cast from solid brass and finished in a turquoise verdigris patina that mimics the natural oxidisation of weathered copper. The lantern design draws from pre-Georgian street lighting, with a tall rectangular glass chamber, a pierced ventilation cap at the top, and a domed finial. A single E27 bulb (sold separately) sits inside clear glass panels, allowing unobstructed light output whilst the brass frame provides the decorative structure.

Designed for mounting on front doors, porch walls, garden entrances and courtyard walls, the Downing Street carries an IP44 rating for protection against rain and dust. The 130mm projection from the wall and 175mm width suit standard door surrounds and gate posts without overwhelming the architecture. The verdigris finish is hand-applied and then lacquered to fix the colour, so it will not continue to oxidise or patinate further once installed.

The turquoise finish distinguishes this lantern from standard black or antique brass outdoor lights, pairing well with coastal, heritage and eclectic exterior schemes. The solid brass construction gives the fitting a substantial 2.5kg weight, and Elstead backs it with a lifetime guarantee covering material and finish defects. The clear glass panels can be cleaned with glass cleaner and a soft cloth to maintain light output over time.

Is the turquoise finish weatherproof?

Yes. The verdigris patina is hand-applied to the solid brass and then sealed with a protective lacquer. The finish will not continue to oxidise or change colour once installed, and the IP44 rating confirms it is suitable for year-round outdoor use in UK weather.

What bulb does it take?

The lantern takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2200K-2700K to complement the period design.

How is it mounted?

The lantern fixes to the wall via a mounting backplate with two screw holes. The backplate should be fixed to solid brick, stone or masonry using appropriate wall plugs and screws. An outdoor-rated electrical junction box behind the backplate is required for safe wiring.

Can the glass be replaced if broken?

Contact Elstead Lighting directly for replacement glass panels. The lantern design allows the glass to be removed and replaced without dismantling the entire brass frame.
