Description

The Downing is a 600mm outdoor wall lantern built from solid brass in an aged brass finish, with a traditional coach-lamp silhouette: clear glass panels on three sides, a vented brass top cap, and decorative turned brass finials at both ends. The central E27 lamp holder sits behind the glass inside a brass back plate, visible through the panels when the bulb is lit. The aged brass finish is hand-applied and lacquered to protect the metal from oxidation and weathering.

Designed for outdoor use on porches, beside front doors, along garden paths and on carriage houses, the Downing carries an IP44 rating for protection against splashing water and dust. The lantern accepts any standard E27 bulb up to 60W (sold separately), allowing you to choose between warm filament bulbs for a heritage look or LED equivalents for lower energy use. The 130mm projection from the wall and 175mm width make it proportionate to most doorway or porch widths without overwhelming smaller entrances.

The solid brass construction gives the fitting a substantial weight and presence that lighter aluminium or powder-coated lanterns lack. The aged finish varies slightly across the surface, with darker tones settling into the turned details and corners where the brass would naturally tarnish over time. The clear glass panels are set into brass frames and allow full light output without the dimming effect of seeded or frosted glass, while the vented top cap permits heat to rise away from the bulb.

Frequently Asked

What does the IP44 rating mean for outdoor use?

IP44 protects against splashing water from any direction and solid objects larger than 1mm (dust and debris). The Downing is suitable for covered porches, under eaves, and beside doorways where it is sheltered from direct rain but exposed to wind-driven spray and damp conditions. It should not be installed in fully exposed positions where heavy rain hits the lantern directly for extended periods.

What bulb should be used?

The lantern takes a standard E27 bulb up to 60W, sold separately. Most users pair it with a warm-white LED filament bulb (2700K-3000K) in the 4-8W range to replicate the look of traditional incandescent bulbs while reducing energy use. Clear glass bulbs show the filament through the panels; frosted bulbs provide more diffused light.

How is the brass finish maintained?

The aged brass finish is lacquered to prevent oxidation. Wipe the brass surfaces with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and debris. Avoid abrasive cleaners, metal polishes or harsh chemicals that can damage the lacquer. The glass panels can be cleaned with standard glass cleaner and a soft cloth.

What architectural styles does it suit?

The Downing's coach-lamp silhouette suits Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and pre-war British architecture, as well as contemporary homes where a traditional accent is wanted. The aged brass finish pairs with brick, stone, painted render and timber cladding in both warm and neutral tones.
