Description
A side table carved from a solid block of mango wood as a stack of mouldings, 50cm tall on a 33cm square footprint. From the top it runs a flat square slab, a band notched into short vertical flutes, a deep moulding that sweeps out and curves back in, a narrow waist, two square collars, then a moulding flaring out to a base slab notched like the top. The whole piece reads as a column capital standing on its own base.
The top is 33cm square, which takes a lamp, a book and a glass rather than a tray of things. At 14.8kg it is solid timber the whole way through rather than a frame under a veneer, so it does not shift when something is set down on it or lifted off. Beside a sofa its top stands at about the height of the seat cushion.
The wood is mango, left unstained, so the grain runs from pale honey through to darker brown across the same face and the checks that open along it are left showing rather than filled. Mango comes out of fruit growing: the trees are cropped for years and cut only once they stop bearing. Every table is carved by hand from one block, so the depth of each moulding and the spacing of the notches differ from table to table.

Frequently Asked
How big is the Disha side table?
50cm tall and 33cm square.
Is it carved from one piece?
Yes. Each table is cut and carved by hand from a single block.
There are splits in the wood. Is that a fault?
No. The timber is solid and unfilled, and the checks that open along the grain are left showing.
What is the wood?
Mango, which comes out of fruit growing. The trees are cropped for years and taken down only once they stop bearing.
How do I look after it?
Wash the wood in warm soapy water, then rinse and dry it straight away. The colour will change over time, which is the nature of the material. To feed and protect it, rub an edible oil such as olive or walnut into the surface with a dry cloth.
