Description

The Dipti is a quilted bedspread 220 by 140cm in a cotton and linen blend. One face is block printed with fine charcoal pin stripes over an oatmeal ground; the other is left plain in the same oatmeal. Rows of Kantha running stitch cross both faces, sewn by hand in a dark thread that reads as a broken line of dashes over the stripe and as the whole pattern on the plain side. The edge is bound in a narrow striped tape.

At 220 by 140cm the long side runs across the bed: the 220cm covers the width of a king with an overhang on both sides, and the 140cm reaches from the foot up to about two thirds of the length. Laid that way it turns back at the top. Turned the other way round it drops further down the sides of a super king and covers less of the length. Off the bed it takes the arm of a sofa or folds at the foot.

The fabric is a cotton and linen blend, block printed with the stripe by traditional methods and then quilted with Kantha stitching, each line sewn one at a time so the dashes run long and short rather than even. Block printing presses a carved block by hand, so the stripe breaks and doubles where one impression meets the next. A contrast stitch finishes the reverse. The Dipti is also made at 220 by 240cm, which covers a bed rather than crossing it.
