Description

The Dia is a jute lampshade in a tapered drum, lined pale on the inside. This is the small size: 14.5cm tall, 15.5cm across the top and 20cm across the base. The jute is coarsely woven and the weave is visible across the whole surface, with the slub and the colour variation of the fibre left in, so lit from inside the shade glows with the texture showing rather than reading as a flat panel.

At 20cm across the base this is the size for a small base: a bedside lamp, a squat wooden or glass body, or a spot where a wider shade would overhang the table it stands on. The lining reflects light back down onto a surface instead of letting it escape through the weave in every direction, which is what makes a small jute shade usable at close range rather than only decorative. It fits a table lamp, a floor lamp or a ceiling pendant, so it is not tied to one position in a room. It weighs 0.21kg.

Jute is a plant fibre, coarse and hard wearing, and it is woven before being formed over the frame, so the tension and the grain differ from shade to shade. The Dia range runs from small to extra large in this natural jute and again in an ink colourway. No bulb, base or fitting is included.
