Description

A rectangular cushion cover 60 x 40cm, made up the same way as the square Dhara: a thick cotton velvet face, a flat flange border of the same velvet round all four sides, and a natural linen reverse. The border is cut from the velvet rather than added as a separate trim, so it carries the same nap as the face. The grey is soft rather than near-black, and the pile catches the light unevenly across the rectangle.

Sixty by forty is the size that sits in front of a square cushion rather than beside it, low enough to take the small of the back when someone leans into a sofa. The flange gives the rectangle an outline, which keeps it from reading as a flat slab against the cushions behind. Two of them in front of a pair of square cushions is the arrangement the shape is cut for. This is the cover on its own.

The velvet face and the linen reverse are both woven on a traditional power loom, and the cover is made up and finished by hand. Dhara also runs as a 50 x 50cm square in the same charcoal velvet, cut and finished the same way.
