Dhara 50 x 50cm Velvet Cushion Cover - Charcoal

A square cushion cover 50 x 50cm, with a thick cotton velvet face and a flat flange border of the same velvet running right round the outside. The velvet reads as a soft mid grey and the pile shifts lighter and darker across the face as it catches the light, so the tone is never quite flat. There is no trim, no piping and no pattern: the border and the pile are the whole of it.

The flange is what separates this from a plain knife-edge cover. The seam sits inside the border rather than at the very edge, so the cover carries a flat frame around it and keeps a defined outline when it is propped against the arm of a sofa. Fifty centimetres square is the standard size for a sofa back, and two of them together along one is where the border shows most clearly. This is the cover on its own.

The face is a thick cotton velvet and the reverse is natural linen, both woven on a traditional power loom and made up by hand. Dhara also runs as a 60 x 40cm rectangle in the same charcoal velvet.

How do I look after it?

Some fabrics are washable and others are spot clean only. Lift a spill with an absorbent tissue first, then blot the area with a sponge or a folded towel moistened in lukewarm water, and dry it by blowing warm air across the surface so it does not water mark. Larger stains are a job for a professional. The covers are tested for colourfastness.
