Description
Dex is a magazine rack woven from water hyacinth. It is a single band of fibre folded into a deep zigzag, so it stands on its own and forms two open slots for reading matter. The composition is 95% water hyacinth and 5% iron, and the colour is Natural, true to the woven fibre itself. At 50cm long, 34cm wide and 42cm tall it is roomy enough for a good stack of magazines, newspapers and catalogues, yet compact enough to tuck beside a chair.
It belongs in a living room beside a sofa or armchair, where the week's papers otherwise end up on the floor or the coffee table. It works just as well by a bed for the books in progress, in a study for catalogues and folders, or in a hallway for post and maps. The open slots let you see what you have at a glance and pull out the copy you want without lifting the rest. Anyone who reads in print, or a household with children's comics and colouring books, will put it to daily use.
Water hyacinth is a plant fibre, so each strand varies slightly in tone and thickness, which gives the weave its texture. The tall end panel has a cut-out handle, and at 1.4KG the rack is light enough to carry from room to room with one hand. Like most woven plant fibres, water hyacinth keeps its looks best away from damp and strong direct sun. For styling, set it at the end of a sofa with a throw nearby, or pair it with other woven pieces and pale wood for a calm, textured corner of the room.
