Description

The Davli is a flat woven jute doormat, 60 x 90cm and 2cm thick. Narrow bands of dark brown jute run across the natural ground at close intervals, so the mat reads as finely striped rather than plain. The weave is chunky and open enough to pick out the individual strands, and a fringe finishes each short end.

This is an indoor mat, and it goes inside a front door. At 2cm thick it will sit under a door that has the clearance to swing over it. The weave is heavy enough to take boots, and the dark bands break up the natural ground, so wear shows less on it than it would on a plain mat.

The mat is jute throughout, and the dark bands are dark brown jute rather than a second fibre. Jute is a rain-fed crop that needs little fertiliser or pesticide, and the fibre is spun into strong thread before it is woven. The finished mat weighs 1.5kg.
