Description

This is a pair of wooden nutcracker figures for Christmas, made from pine and MDF and painted in a multicoloured scheme. They stand 20cm tall and measure 6cm long and 5cm wide, slim enough for a narrow shelf yet tall enough to be noticed from across a room. One wears a top hat, carries a sword at his side and stands on a block base; the other wears a tall cap topped with a ball finial, holds a drum and two drumsticks and stands on a round base. Both have a full, soft-looking beard and hair, a painted moustache and teeth, epaulettes on the shoulders and laced boots.

At 20cm they sit comfortably at eye level: on a mantelpiece, along a bookshelf, on a hall sideboard or either side of a clock on a windowsill. The pair also works as a centrepiece on a Christmas table among sprigs of fir and pine cones, or on a chest of drawers in a bedroom. As a gift they suit anyone who likes a traditional Christmas, and because the two are different characters rather than identical twins, they look as though they belong together without looking repetitive.

They are made from pine and MDF. Pine is a light softwood, and MDF has a smooth, even surface that takes paint cleanly. The buttons, belts and boot laces are picked out in paint, which gives the uniforms their detail. At 0.26KG they are light enough for a narrow ledge or a floating shelf, and the flat bases let each figure stand on its own. For styling, place them a hand's width apart so the hat and the cap each have room, and set them slightly off centre on a mantelpiece with a few fir sprigs behind them.
