Description

A photograph frame made of two panes of clear glass bound at the edges with a slim brass band, 18cm tall and 13cm wide, taking a photograph of up to 5 x 7 inches. The two panes are hinged together down one long edge and close against a small brass hook on the other, so the photograph is laid between them rather than behind a mount. Anything smaller than the full 5 x 7 floats with plain glass all round it. A triangular brass wire strut is hinged across the back and folds flat when it is not in use.

The frame stands rather than hangs. That puts it on a shelf, a mantelpiece or a desk, and at 1cm deep it takes almost no room front to back. Because the glass is clear on both sides of the photograph, whatever is behind the frame shows through around the image, so the same frame reads one way against a plain wall and another against the spines of a bookcase. Danta is made in three sizes and this is the middle one.

The brass is soldered around the glass by hand with traditional tools, so weld marks show at the joins and at the corners of every frame. The finish is rustic rather than bright: uneven across the band, darker where the metal has been worked and lighter where it has not, so no two frames are marked the same way.

Frequently Asked

What size photograph does it take?

Up to 5 x 7 inches. Anything smaller sits between the two panes with plain glass around it.

Does it hang on a wall?

No. It stands on a brass wire strut hinged across the back, which folds flat.

How does the photograph go in?

The two panes are hinged down one long edge and held shut by a small brass hook on the other. Release the hook, lay the photograph on the lower pane and close it again.

Why are there marks on the brass?

The brass is soldered around the glass by hand, so weld marks are left at the joins. Every frame carries its own.

How do I look after it?

Wipe the brass regularly with a soft, dry cloth to stop dust and dirt building up, and use a microfibre cloth in a circular motion on the glass.
