Dankuni Etched Napkin Rings - Antique Brass - Set of 4

A set of four napkin rings, each one a narrow brass band carrying a flat disc 4cm across. The disc is etched by hand with lines radiating out from a small hole at its centre, so the face catches light in spokes as it turns. The brass is finished antique, darker down in the etched grooves than on the raised ground between them, and the ring itself is 3.7cm deep.

The disc lies flat against a folded napkin rather than standing up from it, and at 4cm across it reads from the far side of a table. Four rings dress a table laid for four. They sit on a folded napkin beside a plate, etched face upwards.

Each ring is sand cast in brass: the sand is moulded to shape, molten brass is poured into the void and, once it has cooled, the sand is broken away. Whatever the sand and the metal did as they cooled together is left in the surface, so every ring carries its own small irregularities. The etching is done afterwards by hand, which is why no two discs hold quite the same pattern of lines.

Will the four match?

Not exactly. Each disc is etched by hand and each casting cools differently, so the pattern of lines and the small marks in the surface vary from ring to ring.

How do I look after them?

Hand wash only, using a mild dish soap, and rinse in clean water. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away from them, as they will damage the finish.
