Description
This storage jar is made entirely of stoneware and painted by hand in wide pink stripes, with paler bands and fine pinstripes running along them. The body is a straight-sided round drum, and the lid rises to a point like the top of a circus tent, finished with a round knob to lift it by. It stands 25cm tall and 15.5cm across and holds 1150ml, which makes it a genuinely useful kitchen jar rather than a small trinket pot. At 1.66KG it has a reassuring weight, so it feels solid on a shelf or worktop.
The jar is approved for food, so it can keep biscuits, sweets, sugar, loose tea or coffee beans on the kitchen worktop, and it is a cheerful thing to set on the table for a children's party or a family tea. Away from the kitchen it works just as well as a lidded keepsake jar on a child's bedroom shelf, holding hair clips, crayons or small treasures. Filled with sweets and tied with a ribbon, it also makes a thoughtful present that stays useful long after the contents are gone. In a pastel room or a dining room dressed for a celebration, the stripes carry the look on their own.
The striped finish is painted by hand onto stoneware, a dense ceramic fired at high temperature that is hard-wearing in everyday use. Care is easy: the jar goes in the dishwasher, the microwave and the oven, so a sticky batch of sweets or a dusting of sugar is no trouble to wash away. The lid lifts straight off, which makes filling and topping up quick. For styling, give it a little space on an open shelf or at the end of a dresser, where the pointed lid can be seen from the side, and tie a ribbon round the knob when it goes out as a present.
