Chip Striped Stoneware Bowl 17.5cm - Green

This is a round stoneware bowl with a cheerful, hand-painted face. Broad green stripes run from base to rim on the outside, the word POPCORN is lettered across the side, and the inside is scattered with small painted dots that carry right down to the base. It measures 17.5cm across and 13.5cm tall, a deep, tub-like shape whose sides widen gently from a narrower foot to a softly scalloped rim. The body is 100% stoneware, a dense, hard-fired material that feels solid in the hand, and at 1.11KG this bowl has a reassuring heft.

That weight means it sits steadily where you put it, which suits a hallway table or a desk where things get dropped in and lifted out all day. We like it by the front door as a catch-all for keys, sunglasses and post, or on a bookshelf holding a ball of wool and needles between knitting sessions. In a bathroom it keeps cotton wool pads, hair ties and clips together in one place, and the depth lets a small houseplant in its own plastic pot stand inside, with the rim hiding the pot. The stripes and lettering give it a sense of fun, so it sits happily in a family room, a teenager's bedroom or on a studio shelf as a decorative piece in its own right.

The finish is painted by hand, so the stripes and dots show the gentle irregularities of a brush rather than the crisp edge of a print, and each bowl differs a little from the next. Stoneware is a hard-wearing ceramic, which makes it a good choice for a piece that will be handled every day. For styling, let the green stripes lead: set it on natural wood or a woven mat, or group it on an open shelf with plain pieces so the pattern has room to show.
