Description
Charlie is a long, low dog split across a pair of bookends. One end carries his head, with a long floppy ear, a painted eye and a painted nose, and the other carries his back legs and a curling tail. Stand a row of books between them and his striped middle simply grows longer; remove a few and he shrinks again, so the dog is always as long as the reading on the shelf. Both halves are MDF, finished in multicoloured stripes, and each bookend is 12.5cm long, 15cm wide and 15.5cm tall, a size that sits comfortably beside picture books, paperbacks and slimmer hardbacks.
We see them in a child's bedroom or a nursery, on a bookshelf, a windowsill or the back of a small desk, keeping a growing pile of favourite stories upright and within easy reach. Because the head and tail both face outwards, Charlie reads properly from the front whichever end of the shelf takes his head. They make a cheerful gift for a new bedroom, a birthday or a young reader starting a little library of their own, and grown-up dog lovers may well want them for a study shelf too.
Each bookend is an L shape, a flat base and an upright end, with the cut-out dog standing on the base and small feet under the base. MDF is a dense board made from fine wood fibres, and it gives a smooth, even surface that takes paint well; like any board of its kind, it is happiest kept dry. The set comes as two pieces, a head end and a tail end, and the weight given is 0.846KG. For the best look, give Charlie enough books to stretch his striped middle, then let a small toy or a favourite figure keep him company at the tail end.
