Description

The Chara bottle stands 39cm tall on a straight sided body 17cm across, with a rounded shoulder that draws in to a short neck. A band of antique brass is fitted round that neck, and the glass runs up through it and opens out above into a flat flared lip. The glass is clear with a faint green cast where it thickens at the base and the rim, and the sides carry a shallow dimpled texture, hammered in with hand tools rather than moulded.

This is the tallest of the five Chara bottles, and at 39cm it will stand on the floor beside a chair as readily as on a table. It carries dried grasses as readily as cut stems. The neck is narrow against the 17cm width of the body, so stems gather at the middle rather than spreading across the mouth, and the body takes 7000ml if it is filled with water.

The body is recycled glass and the collar is brass. Waste glass is collected and washed to take out impurities, then crushed and melted down before it is blown, and here it is blown up through the brass ring rather than fitted into it afterwards. Solder marks often show on the brass where the ring was joined. The dimpling falls differently on every bottle, so no two are the same.
