Description

This Chara stands 23cm tall on a 9cm base, a tall and narrow bottle rather than a squat one. The walls taper up from the foot and are worked into broad vertical facets that dimple and ripple across every panel. At the top the wall turns in sharply to a short neck wrapped in a collar of antique brass, and the glass runs up through that collar and folds out above it into a flat rim.

The height suits a long stem: a single branch of eucalyptus, a tall grass, or bare twigs in winter. It stands on a console table next to the small Chara. A tall bottle and a short one side by side give two heights off one surface. It holds 775ml.

Every bottle is blown from recycled glass. Waste glass is collected and washed to lift out impurities, then crushed and melted down before it is worked into a new piece. Because the facets are hammered in by hand, the pattern varies from bottle to bottle, and bubbles and fine striations are left in the walls. The brass collar carries solder marks from the way it is joined. The Chara range runs to five bottles, from 15cm up to 39cm.
