Description

The Chara is a small bottle vase in clear recycled glass, 18cm tall and 9cm across. The body is a tapering cylinder, narrower at the foot than at the shoulder, worked into broad vertical facets whose surfaces dimple and ripple rather than lying flat. A band of antique brass wraps the short neck, and the glass runs up through it and folds out over the top into a flat disc of a rim.

At 18cm it takes a single stem or a short cut of foliage rather than a full arrangement, and the neck is narrow enough to hold one upright without support. A pair of them will stand on a console table, each taking dried stems or standing empty. Light passes straight through the clear body and the dimpled facets bend it, so the bottle reads differently filled with water than dry. It holds 525ml.

The glass is recycled: waste glass is collected and washed to take out impurities, then crushed and melted down before it is blown or placed in moulds. The hammering is done with traditional tools, so the depth of the facets differs from bottle to bottle and small bubbles and striations sit in the walls. Solder marks often show on the brass, and a fine vertical seam runs down the collar. The Chara range runs to five bottles between 15cm and 39cm tall.
