Description
The Chara is a squat bottle vase 15cm tall and 11cm across, blown from recycled glass. The body is a straight cylinder that turns in at the shoulder and runs up into a short narrow neck, with an antique brass collar around that neck and the rolled glass rim above it. The shoulder and the upper body are fluted into vertical ribs; lower down the wall is smooth but uneven, with a visible wave in it and a thick, ridged base. The glass is clear and reads green where it is thickest.
The neck is narrow, so it takes a few stems rather than a bunch: one branch, three or four garden cuttings, or a single long stem leaning out of it. At 15cm it stands below eye level on a dining table and does not cut across the view over it. It weighs 0.685kg empty, most of that in the base and the walls, and it holds 800ml.
The glass is recycled. Waste glass is collected and washed to remove impurities, then crushed and melted down before it is blown. This bottle is blown through the brass ring, so the collar is part of the piece rather than something fitted over it afterwards, and solder marks often show on the brass where it is joined. Chara runs to five bottles in all, from this one at 15cm up to one at 39cm tall.

Frequently Asked
How big is it?
15cm tall and 11cm across. It holds 800ml.
Is the brass collar fixed?
Yes. The glass is blown through the brass ring, so the collar is part of the bottle rather than a separate fitting.
Is the glass recycled?
Yes. Waste glass is collected and washed, then crushed and melted down before it is blown.
Are there other sizes?
Yes. Chara runs to five bottles, from this one at 15cm up to one at 39cm tall.
Why are there marks on the brass?
Solder marks often show where the brass is joined. They come with the handmade process.
How do I look after it?
Wipe it regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Hand wash only, with a mild dish soap, and do not leave it to soak. Harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners will damage the finish.
