Description

The Chameli is a floor lamp base shaped as a tall tapering cone and built from small blocks of mango wood laid in horizontal courses. Every block is a different tone, from pale straw through to a reddish brown, and the joins between them are left visible so the surface reads as coursed work rather than a single turned shaft. The cone narrows from 25cm at the floor to a brass collar and black lampholder at the top, and it stands 101.5cm tall.

The patchwork uses the smaller cuttings left over from furniture making, which is why the blocks vary in size as well as colour. The cone sits straight on the floor with no separate foot, so its widest point is at the bottom and it needs no more space than its own 25cm. At 101.5cm to the lampholder it is a low floor lamp, which puts a shade at about the height of a tall side table and suits a spot beside a low chair or at the end of a sofa rather than over a shoulder. It takes one E27 bulb up to 60W, the flex runs 3.5m with the switch on the cord, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

Mango is a fast growing hardwood and a by-product of fruit growing, and no two cones are cut from the same run of offcuts, so the pattern of blocks is different on every one. The Chameli range also holds a table lamp base built the same way. No shade and no bulb are included.

No, this is the base alone. A tall tapered shade follows the line of the cone; a wide drum sits against it as a contrast.

Why do the blocks not match?

They are offcuts from furniture making, so each one carries whatever tone and grain its board had. That is the pattern rather than a fault in it.

Is it stable at 2.125kg?

The weight is low down, because the cone is widest at the floor and the 25cm base is the full footprint. Add the shade weight at the top when deciding where to stand it.

How do I care for the wood?

A soft dry cloth. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off it, and unplug the lamp before going near it.
