Description

The Chakala is a side table with a round top cut from a single slab of reclaimed wood, 50cm across and thick enough to read as a block rather than a board. The face is chisel-worked into wedge-shaped panels of close parallel ridges running in different directions, so the light breaks across the top panel by panel. The edge is left rough-sawn, with the splits and the grain of the original timber still showing. The base is flat iron bar in a dark rusted tone, two frames meeting in a cross at the floor.

At 60cm it stands taller than most side tables, so the top clears the arm of a low sofa rather than sitting under it, and it will carry a lamp and a stack of books. The top is 50cm across and the table weighs 18.7kg, most of that in the slab. The iron frame is open on all four sides, so the floor underneath stays clear.

The top is reclaimed wood and the base is iron. The form follows the round, weighty stone and wood grinders once used for herbs and spices in Indian kitchens, which is where the carved face and the heavy proportions come from. Because the timber is salvaged, the grain, the tone and the pattern of splits are different on every table. The Chakala range also holds a coffee table.

Frequently Asked

How tall is it?

60cm, with a round top 50cm across.

What is it made from?

A single slab of reclaimed wood on an iron base.

Will two of them match?

No. The timber is salvaged, so the grain, the tone and the pattern of splits are different on every table.

Is there a matching piece?

Yes. The Chakala range also holds a coffee table.

How should it be looked after?

Use coasters under drinks. The finish can mark where it meets a hot cup or a spill, so blot anything spilled straight away with a dry cloth, and keep chemical cleaners off it.
