Description

The Chakai is a shallow disc of mango wood with an open brass cage hanging beneath it. The wood is turned as a broad flattened dome, wide and thin, with the grain running across it and the joins between boards visible as slight changes of tone. Under it a cage of thin brass rods bows out and draws back in to a point, holding the bulb inside without covering it. A brass collar takes the black flex at the top. This is the small: 15.5cm tall and 25.5cm across.

The two halves do opposite jobs. The wooden disc is solid, so it stops light going up and reflects it back down; the brass cage is open, so the bulb is fully visible and throws a pattern of thin shadows onto whatever is below. The result lights a surface directly beneath it and leaves the ceiling dark, which suits a low drop over a table, an island or a counter rather than a room that needs filling. At 25.5cm it is narrow enough to hang in a row. It takes one E27 bulb up to 40W, it is dimmable, the flex runs 1.5m, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

The disc is mango wood and the cage is iron finished in brass. Each disc is turned from its own boards, so the grain and the tone differ from one to the next. The Chakai range also holds a large pendant 45.5cm across and a flush ceiling fitting. Bulbs are not included.

Frequently Asked

Will the bulb be visible?

Yes. The cage is open, so the bulb shows and its shape is part of what you see. A neat filament suits it better than a large frosted globe.

Can I hang several in a row?

Yes, and at 25.5cm across that is what the small is for. Over an island the discs clear each other where the large would not.

Does it light the ceiling?

No. The wooden disc is solid, so light goes down and sideways through the cage and none of it upward.

How do I clean it?

Switch it off and let the bulb cool, then a soft dry cloth on the wood and a soft brush through the cage. Keep harsh chemicals off both.
