Description

The Chakai is a shallow disc of mango wood with an open brass cage hanging beneath it. The disc is turned wide and thin, the grain running across it and the joins between boards showing as slight changes of tone, and the cage of thin brass rods bows out below and draws back to a point. This is the large: 20.5cm tall and 45.5cm across, which is nearly twice the width of the small.

At 45.5cm the disc stops being a detail and becomes a ceiling in miniature: it covers a wide area, throws all of its light downward, and reads from below as a broad plane of wood with a bulb suspended under it. That suits a single fitting over a dining table or an island where one pendant has to do the work of several. The cage stays open so the bulb is visible and casts thin shadows across the surface below. It takes one E27 bulb up to 40W, it is dimmable, the flex runs 1.5m, and it is rated IP20. At 2.3kg the fixing wants to be into a joist.

The disc is mango wood and the cage is iron finished in brass. Each disc is turned from its own boards, so the grain and the tone differ between fittings. The Chakai range also holds a small pendant 25.5cm across and a flush ceiling fitting. Bulbs are not included.

Frequently Asked

How big a table does it suit?

At 45.5cm across it works over a table of 1.2m or more as a single fitting. Over anything smaller it will dominate.

Will the bulb be visible?

Yes. The cage is open, so the bulb shows and throws thin shadows onto the surface below.

Does it light the ceiling?

No. The wooden disc is solid, so everything goes down and sideways.

How do I clean it?

Switch it off and let the bulb cool, then a soft dry cloth on the wood and a soft brush through the cage.
