Description

These are two rectangular trays woven from seagrass, one smaller and one larger, each with a scalloped rim that runs right round all four sides. The smaller tray is 35cm long, 24cm wide and 7cm tall; the larger is 45cm long, 35cm wide and 8cm tall. The larger is a good size for carrying breakfast to the table; the smaller suits a counter or shelf. Across the base the weave is tight and even, while up in the scallops it opens into a looser, airier pattern, which is what gives the edge its soft, rippled outline.

Both trays are made for food, so they earn their place as serving trays: warm bread rolls or pastries at a weekend breakfast, crackers, cheese and fruit when friends come round, or a spread of snacks set on the coffee table. The low sides keep things gathered without getting in the way of reaching in. Between meals they turn to storage just as easily. On a hall console the smaller tray collects keys, post and sunglasses; in a bathroom it holds folded flannels and a bar of soap; on a dressing table it keeps jewellery and perfume together. The larger tray suits an ottoman or a wide sideboard, where it gives books, a vase and a plant a neat base.

The composition is 80% seagrass and 20% iron. Seagrass is a natural grass fibre, so the tone shifts a little from strand to strand, which is a large part of its charm. Neither tray goes in the dishwasher, the microwave or the oven, so keep them for serving and gathering rather than cooking or heating. For styling, stack the smaller tray on the larger for a layered look on a sideboard, or use them apart: the larger down the middle of the dining table with bread and fruit, the smaller beside the kettle with tea and sugar.
