Description

A hurricane lamp, 31cm tall, in brass. At 18cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. An odd number of candles at different heights reads as arranged; an even number at the same height reads as a place setting. Both are useful, for different evenings.

A warm metal finish reflects light yellow rather than white, which is why gold and brass make a room feel warmer at the same brightness. It also reads as softer against warm woods and darker paint, where a cool finish can look stark. Brass warms a room in a way chrome and steel do not, because it reflects light yellow rather than white. Unlacquered, it will darken slowly and unevenly with handling, which most people come to prefer. Glass borrows its colour from whatever sits behind it, so the same piece looks warmer against a painted wall than against a window. It shows dust sooner than an opaque finish, and cleans in seconds.

Look for a drip lip or a wide foot if it is going on a polished surface, because wax on wood is far harder to remove than wax on stone.

Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
