Description

A floor runner 200cm long and 66cm wide, made from braided hemp coiled in on itself so that the rows of braid run parallel to the edges and turn each corner, ring inside ring, all the way to the middle. The braid lies flat rather than tufted, 2.5cm thick, and the fibre is a pale straw with darker strands running through it. The outer edge is the last turn of the braid stitched down, so it finishes a little unevenly rather than in a bound hem.

At 200 by 66cm it fits a hallway runner between a front door and a stair, or the length of a galley kitchen. There is no pile to catch under a door, and 2.5cm is enough to feel underfoot on a hard floor. It lies down a boarded hall floor with a clear margin of board on either side of it.

The fibre is hemp throughout. Hemp grows without pesticides and densely enough to crowd out weeds, and it spins into a thread strong enough to take a floor. The same braided hemp is made as a table runner, as a rectangular rug and as a round one.
