Description

The Birala is a square panel of natural linen, 75 x 75cm, set in a plain mango wood frame. Across the linen run five bands of dense hand stitching in soft white cotton, each band built from short vertical strokes of uneven length and weight, packed close enough to read as a line of writing without spelling anything out. The linen ground shows through between the bands and around them.

At 75cm square it is large enough to hold a wall on its own, and it hangs well above a sideboard. It hangs flat, 3cm deep, on two brackets fixed at the top of the frame. The stitched bands sit in the middle of the panel with a broad margin of bare linen around them.

The stitching draws on traditional Indian Brahmic script, reworked as texture rather than as words. Each cotton thread is worked onto the linen by hand, so the strokes vary from panel to panel and no two are the same. The frame is mango wood. There is a companion piece, the Samaya, stitched the same way.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

75 x 75cm, and 3cm deep.

Does it hang on a wall?

Yes. Two brackets are fitted at the top of the frame on the back.

What is the stitching?

Cotton thread worked onto a linen ground by hand. The shapes come from traditional Indian Brahmic script.

Will every panel look the same?

Not exactly. The stitching is done by hand, so the length and the weight of the strokes differ from panel to panel.

How do I look after it?

Wipe it over with a soft dry cloth so dust and dirt do not build up in the thread.
