Description

The Beru is a handwoven rattan lampshade shaped like a squat bottle: a wide flattened globe with a tall narrow neck rising from the top of it. The neck is woven tight and close, ring above ring; the body is woven open, an irregular lattice of crossing canes with gaps wide enough to see straight through. The rattan is left natural, a warm mid brown that varies from cane to cane. It measures 47cm tall and 39cm across.

An open weave does not soften light so much as break it up: the bulb stays visible through the lattice and the shade throws a net of shadow onto the ceiling and the walls around it. That makes it a shade to hang where the pattern has somewhere to land, over a table or in a stairwell, rather than tight into a corner. It is made for ceiling use only, so it takes a pendant fitting and will not sit on a table lamp. It weighs 1.1kg.

The shades are woven by hand in Indonesia using the techniques the same workshops use for baskets, so the lattice is irregular by nature and the spacing of the canes differs from one shade to the next. The Beru range also holds a large size. No fitting, flex or bulb is included.

No. It is made for ceiling use only. The neck slips over a pendant flex and there is no fitting for a lamp base.

Does it come with a flex or fitting?

No, the shade alone. You will need a pendant set, and the flex runs up through the neck.

Will the bulb show through?

Yes. The body is an open lattice rather than a solid weave, so the bulb is visible and the light passes through it. A softer or frosted bulb is easier on the eye than a clear filament at this openness.

What is the difference from the large one?

Size only. This is the small at 47cm tall and 39cm across; the large is the same shape scaled up.

How do I care for it?

A soft bristle brush to lift dust out of the weave. Rattan is a natural material, so keep harsh chemical cleaners away from it.
