Description

A set of four napkin rings, each 5cm across and 3.5cm deep, handwoven from rattan. The strands are plaited into a flat knot and carried round into a ring, so the surface is a braid running the whole way round with no join to find, and a small opening runs through the middle. The rattan is left its own colour, a warm mid tan that deepens where the strands cross over one another.

The opening takes a folded napkin rather than a bunched one: fold first, then feed it through. At 5cm across the ring sits low on a plate without covering much of the napkin, and four is a table of four, so a longer table needs more than one set. They weigh almost nothing, 0.1kg for the four of them together.

The rings are handwoven by makers in Indonesia using techniques passed from one generation to the next, and each knot is tied by hand, so the strands fall differently on every ring. The Bersama range also holds a bread basket, a fruit bowl, a utensil holder and placemats in the same weave. These come in a set of four.
