Description

A set of four napkin rings, each one a plain round band with a sculpted cluster fixed to one side. The cluster is built from dozens of small cupped scales, overlapped and turned outward in three lobes so that it reads as a pinecone part way open. Where the cluster meets the band sits a single rosette with a squared centre. The antique brass finish is warm and uneven, bright along the raised edge of every scale and much darker in the hollows between them.

The band is plain on the face that sits against the plate, so a folded napkin passes through it without the cluster in the way and the cluster then stands proud of the fold. Each piece measures 10cm at its longest and 8cm across, which makes the cluster the larger part of it. On a laid table each ring takes a pressed napkin, which pulls through and fans open above it.

The rings are iron under an antique brass finish applied by hand. Each one is shaped by metalworkers using traditional methods, and the detail is worked into the surface before the finish goes on, so the depth of the colour and the set of the scales differ from ring to ring. Four come in a set, and no two clusters are laid out identically.
