Description

A 40cm drum shade in faux silk, black on the outside with a white laminate lining that throws light back down into the room. A frosted acrylic diffuser closes the underside, so the lamp is screened and the light that reaches a table or floor is softened rather than bare. Suspension and ceiling plate are in polished chrome, bright enough to catch the light without arguing with the shade. It takes an E27 lamp, and we would choose a GLS-shaped LED here, warm white, up to 20W.

The proportions are easy to place: wide enough to read as the main light in a room, but not so wide that it swamps a small dining table. We reach for it over a kitchen table, in a hall, or in a bedroom where a shallow ceiling fitting would look mean, and it suits a stairwell too, since the chrome suspension covers a long span of drops. Fitted with a dimmable lamp and a compatible dimmer it will come down to a quiet evening level. Indoors and in dry rooms only, so keep it clear of bathroom zones and covered porches.

The shade is a laminated build, black outside and white within, sitting on a chrome frame with the acrylic diffuser at the lower rim. Polished chrome shows fingerprints more than a brushed finish, so a dry cloth over the plate and flex now and then keeps it looking sharp; the shade needs only a soft brush along its outer face, and we would keep sprays and damp cloths away from the laminate altogether. It carries a one year warranty.
