Description

A shallow drum shade in dual faux silk sits close against the ceiling on a polished chrome frame, its nude beige outer face paired with a paler moonlight lining. A frosted diffuser closes the underside, so the lamps read as one even wash of light rather than separate hot spots. At 40cm across it covers a good area of ceiling while keeping its depth modest, which is rather the point of a flush fitting.

We would put this in a hallway, on a landing or in a bedroom where headroom is tight and a pendant would hang into the way. It holds three E27 lamps, and we would fit warm white GLS-shaped LEDs for the softest result through the fabric and the glass. With suitable lamps and a dimmer on the circuit it will dim, which suits a bedroom last thing at night. The neutral beige sits happily against magnolia, off-white and pale grey walls, so it works in a rented flat as readily as in a house mid-redecoration.

The shade is fabric over a metal frame, and the polished chrome carries a bright mirror sheen that picks up daylight from a window or a stairwell. Keep the fabric fresh with a soft brush or the upholstery nozzle of a vacuum on its lowest setting, and give the metalwork an occasional wipe with a barely damp cloth, power off and the lamps cold.
