The shade here does the work: a dual faux silk drum in taupe, lined in halo gold so the light takes a warm cast as it spreads. Below it sits a frosted acrylic diffuser ringed in polished chrome, which softens the view up into the fitting and keeps the three E27 lamps out of sight. At 50cm across it is a broad, shallow shape that sits close to the ceiling rather than dropping into the room. It is a fitting that reads as a shade first and a light fitting second.

We reach for this where a pendant would hang too low: a hallway with a modest ceiling, a bedroom where the bed sits below the light, a landing where anything on a flex would be in the way. The width suits a bigger room, so it holds its own in a sitting room or over a dining table where headroom is short. It will dim with the right lamps and a compatible dimmer, which helps in a bedroom; we would choose warm white LED GLS lamps for it.

The frame is polished chrome, and the acrylic diffuser with faux silk shade keeps it light for a fitting of this width. It carries a one year warranty. Dust the diffuser with a dry cloth and give the faux silk an occasional going over with a soft brush; water and sprays do neither any favours, and it belongs in dry rooms away from steam and splashes. Three E27 lamps, up to 20W each. LED GLS A60 lamps are the sensible choice and suit the frosted diffuser well.

Can I put it on a dimmer?

Yes, provided you use dimmable lamps and a dimmer matched to them. No dimmer is supplied with the fitting.
