Description

A square panel of handwoven hemp and jute, 50cm on each side and set into a flat mango wood frame 4cm deep. The ground is woven plain and close. Across the middle of it a band of triangles is built up in raised knots that stand proud of the weave, stepping up and down in a zigzag, each block worked in a darker tone than the ground behind it.

The panel reads at a distance as texture rather than as pattern, which suits a wall above a sofa or a bed where the surfaces below it are already fabric. It hangs from the back of the frame and takes one fixing. Two of the panels hang side by side on a plain wall, the triangle design next to the diamond, which is how the pair is meant to be used.

The weave is hemp and jute worked on a traditional Indian handloom, and the frame is mango wood. Jute is rain fed and needs little fertiliser or pesticide, and the fibre spins into a thread strong enough to hold the raised knots. Each panel is woven, braided and stitched by hand, so the depth and spacing of the knotted blocks differ from one to the next. The same panel is made in a diamond design as well as this triangle one.
