Description

A square panel of hand-woven jute, 75cm each way, held in a flat mango wood frame. The weave is coarse and open, and a geometric pattern of cross motifs is worked into it in a raised, denser texture that sits slightly darker than the ground. The crosses are spaced across the field in rough rows, and because each one is worked by hand no two come out quite the same shape. The panel reads throughout in the natural tones of the jute.

It measures 75cm square and stands 3cm off the wall, so it hangs close to flat, and it weighs 6kg. Above a sideboard it hangs high enough to clear whatever stands on the top. The Bawal range runs to three designs of the same size, so two or three can be hung as a row or a block.

The panel is jute on a mango wood frame. Jute is a rain-fed crop with little need for fertiliser or pesticide, and the fibre is spun into threads strong enough to take the weave. The work is done on a traditional Indian handloom, woven, braided and stitched by hand, and it is that hand work that gives the pattern its irregularity.
