The Bastian LED Alabaster Linear Wall Light is a slim, linear wall light: a long straight bar of alabaster, 45cm tall and 4cm wide, with softly rounded ends. The alabaster shade has the stone's own cloudy markings, and when the light is on it glows from within, warm and even along its whole length. The light comes from an integrated LED, so there is no bulb to fit or change. It draws 6W and gives 400 lumens at 3000K, a warm white, with a colour rendering index of 85 or above, so colours and skin tones look true beside it.

Its 180 degree beam spreads light broadly across the wall rather than throwing a narrow pool, which makes it a good choice for gentle background light. We like a pair either side of a bed, a run of them along a hallway or landing, or one beside a mirror in a dressing room. At 4cm wide it sits neatly where space is tight, such as the strip of wall beside a door frame. It is rated IP20, so it is for dry rooms only, and its clean lines suit a modern interior. It works on an ordinary on-off switch and is not dimmable, so plan around its steady 400 lumens.

Alabaster is a natural stone, so the markings vary from one shade to the next and each one is its own. The fitting runs on 220-240V mains; as a mains fitting it is for a qualified electrician to install, and it carries a 5 year guarantee. For styling, we would keep the wall plain and pale and let the stone do the work: two at the same height either side of a headboard or mirror look calm and balanced, and the slim upright line draws the eye upward.
