Description

The Basti is a wall shelf of hammered iron, 120cm long, carried on three brackets and finished in antique brass. The shelf is a single flat plate, dimpled all over by hand so the light breaks up along the front edge. Under it a round rail runs between the brackets, and six hooks hang from that rail, each one a simple J of bar with a rolled loop at the top that slides along.

It stands 25cm off the wall, deep enough for stacked bowls, folded blankets or books laid flat, and the whole piece measures 26cm from the top of the shelf to the bottom of the hooks. The six hooks slide along the rail, so they can be pushed together for a row of mugs or spread out for coats and bags. Above a worktop it takes bowls and books on the shelf, and chopping boards or baskets on the hooks beneath.

The shelf is iron throughout. It is soldered by hand, hammered by hand for the texture, and then given the antique brass finish, so the tone is uneven across the plate and darker where the hammer has been. It weighs 6kg and is made to be wall hung. It is not for a bathroom.
