Five slender arms rise from a satin nickel centre and hold their candle lamps inside one wide drum shade, so the light is pooled rather than scattered thinly across the room. The shade is faux silk, taupe on the outside with a halo gold lining, and the gold is what you notice once the lamps are lit: it warms everything that falls onto the table below. At 60cm across it has real width without much depth, and the chain lets you set the drop to suit the room.

This is one we reach for over a dining table, where a broad shade can sit low and the lining does the quiet work. It suits a wide hallway too, or a bedroom with the ceiling height to carry something this generous. We would use LED candle lamps here, and if you want the level to come down of an evening, choose dimmable ones and run them from a compatible dimmer. Lit low it gives a soft, gathered glow over the places people sit; turned up, it covers a full table comfortably.

The metalwork wears a satin nickel finish, a soft grey sheen that sits happily beside brushed steel, pale oak or warm brass accents elsewhere in the room. The faux silk keeps its shape and only asks for a gentle going over with a soft brush or the upholstery head of the vacuum; keep water and sprays off the fabric, and give the nickel nothing more than a dry cloth now and then. It carries a one year warranty. Taupe and gold are easy company in most schemes, which makes this a good partner for plainer nickel wall lights and table lamps rather than a fitting that has to be worked around. How far down will it hang?

The drop adjusts from 340mm at its shortest to 1800mm at its longest, using the 1.5m chain supplied. Over a dining table, most people set the shade so the lower edge sits well above eye level when seated.

What lamps does it take?

It takes five E14 lamps, with LED candle lamps of the C35 shape being the natural choice. The maximum is 20W per lamp. They are not supplied with the pendant.

Can I dim it?

Yes, provided you fit dimmable lamps and use a dimmer suited to them. No dimmer is supplied.

What is the shade made of?

How big is the shade?

It measures 600mm in diameter and 150mm deep, with a body height of 220mm. It is a wide, shallow drum rather than a deep one.
