Description

The Banyan hangs a wide drum shade in grey faux silk from a slim chain, with three arms fanning out beneath the fabric to hold candle lamps. The metalwork is finished in satin nickel, a soft brushed silver that keeps the fitting quiet rather than showy. At 45cm across, the shade reads as a proper shape in a room without crowding it. The 1.5m chain gives plenty of scope to set the height, so the pendant can sit well up in a hallway or hang lower over a table.

We reach for this one where a single lamp pendant would look thin: over a dining table, in a sitting room with a fair ceiling height, or centred on a wide landing. Each arm takes an E14 candle lamp, and we would fit warm white LED candles for a soft, even light through the fabric. Dimming is possible if you choose dimmable lamps, which suits long dinners and quieter evenings. It belongs in dry rooms indoors, so keep it clear of shower rooms and anywhere steam gathers. Light passes through the fabric rather than glaring straight down, which is easier over seating.

The shade pairs faux silk on the outside with a white laminate lining, which throws light down and keeps the grey looking clean. Chain, ceiling plate and arms all carry the same satin nickel finish. For upkeep, take a soft brush over the fabric now and then to lift dust, then wipe the metal with a dry cloth; sprays and polish do the shade no favours. It carries a one year warranty.
