Description

The Balise is a compact table lamp made as a small lantern: a cylinder of ribbed blown glass held between two deep bands of iron in a terracotta finish. The fluted glass screen sits at the centre, so the light glows through its vertical ribs while the top and bottom bands keep the cylindrical shape neat and grounded. It comes in two sizes. The Small stands 16cm tall and 11cm across, on a 9cm base. The Medium stands 19.5cm tall and 13.5cm across, on an 11cm base. Both sizes take one GX53 lamp.

Its small footprint makes it an easy fit for a bedside table, a desk, a bookshelf or a side table beside a sofa, anywhere a gentle glow at low level is wanted rather than a bright overhead light. We like the Small on a narrow bedside or a shelf with little headroom, while the Medium has a little more presence on a console table or in a living room corner. It is rated IP20, so it is for dry rooms only. The 2m cable gives you room to place it a little away from the socket, and it runs on 220-240V mains.

The structure is iron and the screen is blown glass, and the two meet neatly where the glass sits into the top and bottom bands. The terracotta finish gives a warm, earthy colour that sits well with natural wood, linen and stone, and against white or cream walls. It switches simply on and off rather than dimming, and it carries a 3 year guarantee. For styling, we would set two Small lamps either side of a bed for a matched pair, or stand the Medium on a short stack of books on a sideboard, where the ribbed glass catches the eye.
