Description

The large wide Baba in burnt amber is the broad shape at its biggest, 33cm across and 41cm tall, swelling out near the base and drawing in sharply to a narrow neck. There is more glass here than on any other Baba and the amber is at its strongest for it, a deep orange through the body that lightens only at the shoulder. The hammered facets run right round the widest part, each one holding its own patch of colour. A chrome collar caps the neck and carries a black lampholder with a shade ring, and the rust coloured cord carries a switch along its length.

This is a base only: no shade and no bulb. At 33cm across it spreads rather than stands, so a sideboard or a console suits it and a bedside table does not. Lit, it puts warm orange onto the surface under it and onto whatever stands beside it, which is what the amber colourway does that the clear and the green do not. It takes an E27 bulb, the cord runs 2.5m, the plug is UK and EU, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

The glass is recycled and hand blown into a mould, then hammered while still molten, so the facets and the depth of the amber differ from one base to the next. The collar and stem are chrome. The Baba range runs to eleven lamp bases in clear, green and burnt amber, in tall and wide shapes and in two sizes. Neither a shade nor a bulb is included.

How is it different from the large tall?

The large tall is 50cm high and 24cm across against 41cm and 33cm here. This one is the wider and the heavier of the two.

Is there a switch on the cord?

Yes. The on and off switch sits on the 2.5m cord, so the lamp is switched at the cord rather than at the socket.

How do I clean it?

Unplug it and take any shade off, then wipe the glass with a soft dry cloth in a circular motion. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off it.
