Artisan Mango Wood Bowl - Natural

The Artisan Bowl is a small mango wood bowl, 12.5cm across and 8cm deep. It is food safe, so it can be used for food rather than standing empty. The colour and the finish are both the wood itself, with nothing applied over the grain.

It is 8cm deep against 12.5cm across, which makes it a deep bowl rather than a shallow dish, and it holds more than its width suggests. On a table that suits olives, nuts or salt at each setting, or a dip set beside a board. Away from the table the same size takes keys, rings or coins on a hall shelf or beside a desk.

The wood is mango. Mango trees are grown first for their fruit and harvested over a number of years, and only once they stop bearing are they cut for timber, which lets the grower replant and draws a second income from the same tree. The Artisan range also runs to a side plate, a dinner plate and a large serving plate in the same wood. The bowl is sold singly.

How do I look after it?

Wash it in warm soapy water after every use to stop it staining, then rinse it and dry it straight away. Do not leave it to soak.

Will it stay the colour it arrives?

Not entirely. Mango wood shifts in tone over time. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the surface with a dry cloth will nourish and protect it, though the oil will darken the wood.
