Description

A flat disc of iron wire, 72cm across and 0.5cm thick, sculpted by hand. Straight spokes run out from a tight twisted knot at the centre, concentric rings of wire cross them, and the wires are bound at every intersection, so the surface reads as a web of small triangles that grow larger towards the rim. The outer edge is a zigzag, the wire running out to a point and back all the way round, and the border wire itself is tightly coiled. The finish is a matt rust that reads as a dark warm brown against a pale wall.

At 72cm it fills a wall panel on its own, and hung beside the 118cm size of the same piece the two read as one pattern at two scales. It is only 0.5cm thick, so it sits almost flat to the wall and casts a fine shadow of its own web onto the plaster behind it. The wire can be bent and worked by hand after it arrives, so the shape of the disc and the set of the rim can be adjusted.

The wire is iron. It is sculpted and joined by hand using traditional tools, so no two discs carry exactly the same web. It is suitable for outdoor use as well as indoors. The same piece is also made at 118cm across.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

72cm across and 0.5cm thick. The same piece is also made at 118cm across.

Can it go outside?

Yes. It is suitable for outdoor use as well as indoors.

How does it sit on the wall?

Almost flat, at 0.5cm thick. The wire can be bent by hand after it arrives, so the shape and the set of the rim can be adjusted to suit the wall.

Is every one the same?

No. Each disc is sculpted and joined by hand, so the web differs from piece to piece.

How should it be looked after?

Use a soft-bristle brush to lift dust from the wire. For dirt, a mild soap and water on a soft cloth will clean it. Harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners will damage the finish.
