Description

A storage bench 130cm long, 46cm deep and 48cm high, upholstered all over in a handwoven cotton and jute flat weave. The fabric is undyed: cream and straw yarns worked together so the surface carries a fine vertical slub and no pattern or colour beyond the natural tone of the fibres. The lid is padded and overhangs the body a little, standing clear of it on a line that runs the whole length, and the bench sits on four small dark feet.

At 130cm it is long enough for two to sit, at 48cm the lid stands at seat height, and the bench will carry up to 180kg. The 46cm depth keeps it clear of a walkway in a hallway, and it works as well at the foot of a bed. The lid is the way into the storage below, and the seam where it meets the body runs from end to end.

The frame is solid mango wood and the upholstery is a cotton and jute weave, made on a traditional loom and then stretched and fixed over the lid and the body by hand. Because the yarns are undyed, the tone shifts slightly between one stretch of the weave and the next, and the slub falls differently on every bench. The Aranya range also holds an upholstered ottoman and an occasional chair.

Larger stains should go to a professional. Keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades natural dyes and yarns.
