Description

A flat woven rug, 150cm by 240cm, in natural jute with the pattern picked out in ivory cotton. A deep border runs round all four sides, filled with rows of small geometric figures, and the field inside it carries diamonds and bands of sawtooth triangles. The pattern is woven in rather than printed on. A twisted ivory fringe finishes each of the 150cm ends.

At 150 by 240cm the rug covers the floor under a coffee table with room for the front feet of a sofa to stand on it, and it will run the length of a hall. On bare boards the pale jute reads as a light patch against dark timber, and the ivory pattern comes and goes with the light. At 1.5cm thick it sits close to the floor, and the fringed ends fall at the two short sides.

The rug is woven on a traditional Indian handloom, and the makers interlace the threads by hand to build a durable, textured surface. The dyes are azo free and have been tested for colourfastness and lightfastness. Some shedding of fibre can be expected from natural fibres. The Aqil is also made at 200 by 300cm.
