Description
A candle holder made out of an old wooden seeder, a hand tool once used to sow seed on Indian farms before machinery took the work over. The block is squat and chamfered, 20cm across including the two turned arms that stand out from opposite sides, 13cm deep and 8cm tall, with the lower corners cut away towards a narrower flat base. The seed cavity in the top is lined with a metal dish and a short spike stands at its centre. The wood carries the marks it came with: adze cuts across the front, splits along the grain, worn edges and the colour of long use.
The spike takes a pillar candle, which stands on top of the block rather than sinking into it. At 8cm high and 20cm across, the holder is low and wide, so it sits on a coffee table, a hearth or a wide windowsill without standing over what is beside it. The arms are what it is picked up by.
Every holder is salvaged from a disused seeder, cleaned and only lightly restored, so the wear stays on it. That means each one is different: the shape of the block, the run of the splits and the colour of the wood belong to the tool it used to be, not to a pattern. The cavity is lined with metal and everything else is the original wood. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked
What candle does it take?
A pillar candle. A short spike in the middle of the metal-lined cavity holds it steady. The candle is not included.
What was it before?
A wooden seeder, a hand tool used to sow seed on Indian farms before mechanised agriculture.
Will they all look the same?
No. Each one is salvaged from a different tool and only lightly restored, so the shape, the splits and the colour vary from piece to piece.
Does it get hot?
Yes, it does. Stand the candle securely on the spike, keep the holder out of reach of children, let it cool fully before it is moved, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
How is the wax taken off?
Wash it with a mild dish soap and warm water after every use so wax does not build up. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off the finish.
