Description

The Anjuna is a ceramic bowl 22cm across and 17cm high, raised on a flared foot so the bowl stands clear of the surface under it. The glaze is reactive and off-white, pitted all over with dark brown and black speckling that gathers towards the rim and thins down the body. The rim is uneven rather than a true circle, and the glaze breaks to dark brown along its edge.

At 22cm across this is a bowl for the middle of a table or a sideboard rather than for a shelf edge. The foot is narrower than the bowl, so it takes up less of the surface than the width suggests, and it lifts the bowl clear of the wood beneath. It is the dark speckling that carries the colour rather than the off-white under it.

The bowl is ceramic under a reactive glaze. The glaze moves as it fires, so the pitting, the depth of the brown and the run of the dark edge at the rim differ from one bowl to the next, and the colour given as white arrives as an off-white broken with brown. The Anjuna range carries the same glaze on decorative jugs and on ceramic vases.
