Description

The Amhara is a bench 101cm long and 45cm high, with a frame of acacia and a seat of woven jute. Four square legs splay slightly outwards and taper towards the floor, braced by a low rail at each end and one long stretcher running the length between them. The jute cord is wrapped over the two long rails and laid in tight rows across the bench, so the rails disappear under it and the seat reads as one solid band of cord between the four leg tops.

The seat stands 45cm off the floor and the bench is 36cm from front to back, so it holds close against a wall. It stands against a wall and takes clothes laid over one end. It is made for the foot of a bed, or for a hallway where it gives somewhere to sit to put shoes on. The woven area is 30cm deep, set inside the 36cm frame.

The frame is acacia, a hard and water resistant wood with an open grain that runs dark through the paler timber, and the grain and the knots fall differently on every bench. The seat is jute cord, woven by hand in a traditional Indian pattern that carries across the whole width.

Frequently Asked

How high is the seat?

45cm off the floor.

What is the seat made from?

Jute cord, wrapped over the frame rails and woven by hand in a traditional Indian pattern.

How much floor does it take?

101cm long and 36cm from front to back.

Will every bench look the same?

No. The grain and the knots in the acacia fall differently on every frame, and the seat is woven by hand.

How should it be looked after?

Wash the wood in warm soapy water, then rinse and dry it at once. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the surface with a dry cloth will nourish and protect it. The colour will change over time.
