Description

A backless stool in mango wood, 76cm to the top of the seat, 37cm across and 33cm deep. The seat is a single thick plank, dished across its width and lifted at both ends. Four square legs splay outwards from under it, braced by a rail along each long side and a lower rail running between them. The wood is left natural, so the grain, the knots and the shifts from pale straw to a warmer brown run straight through the piece.

At 76cm to the seat this is made for a bar or a high kitchen island rather than for a dining table. The rail along each side gives the feet somewhere to rest at that height, and with no back to it the stool pushes right under a counter when it is not in use. At 37cm across, two or three will sit along an island without the shoulders touching. It takes up to 65kg.

The wood is mango throughout, finished smooth and left unstained. Mango trees are grown for fruit first and cropped for years before they stop bearing; only then is the timber cut, which lets the growers put in new trees and earn from the same ground twice. Each stool is made by hand, so the depth of the curve in the seat varies a little from one to the next.
